What is a Swift Code?

A swift code is a number used to identify banks and financial institutions.

The SWIFT code or the SWIFT number for Kenyan banks is used to identify Kenyan banks in the international financial system. The SWIFT Code can sometimes be called the Business Identifier Code (BIC). SWIFT & BIC codes facilitate the transfer of money between banks from one country to the other. For example, you will need the BIC or the SWIFT CODE to receive your business money or transfer payment internationally.

What is the Format of a SWIFT Code?

The SWIFT or BIC code has 8 to 11 characters representing branch, bank, country and location in the following order:

Bank Code [4 letters]

The first 4 letters of the  SWIFT code represent the bank. The letters are unique to each bank, and they are abbreviations of the Bank’s name.

Country Code [2 letters]

The letters following the bank code show the country where the bank is operating. If a bank has branches in different countries, the country code in its SWIFT code changes.

Location Code [2 Letters]

The SWIFT code has 2 letters representing the bank’s head office address. Keep in mind that a bank with different branches will have different location codes

Branch Code [3 numerals]

The Branch code in the SWIFT Code is represented through digits.
